The councillor of the Grupo Municipal Socialista Mamen González has asked the mayor, José María Bellido, for the Ayuntamiento to launch a specific plan so that the major cultural, festive and tourist events of Córdoba also generate economic activity for the commerce and hospitality businesses in the neighbourhoods where they are held.

González made this request coinciding with the start of the Velá de la Fuensanta. According to the councillor, Córdoba has, throughout the year, events capable of attracting thousands of visitors, but lacks a municipal strategy that turns that movement into opportunities for shopkeepers in each area.

After the Velá, other events will follow such as Cabalcor, Cosmopoética, Flora and, later on, the Christmas programme. González explained that her proposal does not consist of bringing each event to every neighbourhood, but rather that each major event should have behind it a strategy so that its activity benefits the commerce of its surroundings: that the Velá benefits the businesses of la Fuensanta, that Cabalcor has an impact on its own, or that Flora and Cosmopoética translate into opportunities for the establishments in the areas where they take place.

The Grupo Municipal Socialista proposes that the areas of Comercio, Turismo, Cultura and Fiestas work in a coordinated way to design specific campaigns, routes and proposals for the establishments in the affected areas, together with promotional actions and agreements with the tourism and hospitality sectors.

«We cannot settle for organising events and counting attendees. The question is how much of all that movement ends up entering the till of a shop, a bar or a small business in the area», González stated, adding that the goal is for that movement to also become consumption and economic activity for the surroundings.

Request ahead of Christmas

The councillor has also demanded that the municipal Government summon the associations of shopkeepers and businesspeople before designing the autumn and winter programme, and in particular the Christmas campaign, so that the businesses themselves can put forward proposals and make the most of the opportunities of these events.

González concluded that every major event organised or supported by the Ayuntamiento must also be an opportunity for the economy of the area where it is held, and that the city that attracts visitors must also be a city that generates activity for the surrounding businesses.
